Traditionally, PTs and Chiros don’t like each other. Maybe it’s business competition. It’s embarrassing to admit, but I have been a part of business competition, where grown adults act like 2 year olds.
Chiros do have a strange historical beginning, and I am not going to review that here. I would not do it justice. You can find that history from different sources.
It occurred to me recently that traditional medical history also has some sketchiness. For example, on the Lewis and Clark expedition, the “doctor” was handing out laxatives for dysentery. ouch….or as Beavis says “diarrhea , cha cha cha..”. In 1800, some doctors believed that we should draw out “excess blood” to heal people. One case I read was 80oz per day. The patient “had no energy.” Go figure.
I started working as a lowly assist in ‘94 in small town New Mexico. I was told by the PT I worked for that the local Chiro was a corrupt, snake oil salesman.
I do know after many years, that there are good and bad people in many professions.
Recently a Chiro on line had a great burn towards “us.” His social media post basically stated, “wait a minute, you PTs have been griping about us doing manipulations for years, and now you call the same procedures osteopractic?, and now it’s ok?”
I don’t hate Chiros, mostly because I have had many patients tell me that they have helped them. I don’t know much about the profession.
My impression is that many times we are trying to achieve the same outcome through different means. In therapy, I am trying to build muscle tone in the trunk muscles to pull the spine into better alignment. Sounds like chiropractic is faster.
At least one Chiro I am friends with, ( and kudos to him because he reached out first, and didn’t care about the pettiness. That’s probably why he has such a successful and busy practice) will suggest to patient’s that they need the same improvements in muscle tone after his adjustments.
Now will adjustments fix all the medical claims that are made? I don’t know. Everyone should be skeptical and ask questions of every medical profession.
